Where Advanced Robotic Printing and Artistic Vision Converge — Illuminating the Heart of Hyatt Regency Greenwich
Sculpting Light with Precision: A Bespoke Chandelier for Hyatt Regency
Can innovative technology and artistic design reshape how we experience lighting in grand architectural spaces?
Fab.Pub was commissioned to create a showpiece for the Hyatt Regency in Greenwich, Connecticut, working in partnership with Office Of Things and One Hat One Hand.
The task: 3D print eight complex tubular, ring-shaped lighting diffusers to form a 4.6m diameter chandelier. Suspended in the atrium of this prestigious hotel, the chandelier combines architectural brilliance with cutting-edge 3D printing technology.
The piece not only acts as a lighting fixture but as a central art installation that enhances the luxurious atmosphere of the space.
Designing with Precision: Overcoming Curved Geometry and Fabrication Complexities
The challenge lay in the symmetrical design of the diffusers, which featured an undulating spinal-chord-like structure. Conventional 3D printing methods couldn’t replicate these intricate curvatures without risking failure in high-cantilever areas. Moreover, the integration of metal capping fixtures and alignment plates added further complexity, requiring specialized production methods to achieve seamless results while ensuring the structural integrity of the chandelier.
Innovative Solutions:Robotic Printing and Algorithmic Toolpaths to the Rescue
To meet the project’s precise specifications, Fab.Pub deployed a 6-axis robotic printer, bypassing traditional horizontal printing limitations. An advanced algorithm was developed to adjust layer heights dynamically, guided by curvature analysis, ensuring that the high-curvature, cantilevered sections were printable. This variable-height printing technique minimized overhang failures, preserving the design's integrity while allowing for seamless assembly.
Additionally, the diffusers were printed using a custom compound of fire-retardant, translucent PLA bioplastic, developed in-house to meet the exact lighting requirements of the atrium.
Lighting Innovation, Material Excellence:High-Tech Materials Meet Digital Fabrication
Fab.Pub’s proprietary blend of PLA bioplastics provided the necessary translucency for diffusing light while maintaining the required safety standards.
The custom-developed material allowed the chandelier to radiate a warm, diffused light while retaining a visually striking aesthetic, even when unlit. Through detailed material studies and digital fabrication, Fab.Pub successfully delivered a lighting solution that merges function and form, elevating the overall guest experience at the Hyatt Regency.
The Underwater World Brought to Life: Key Design Features That Elevate ROE's Ambiance
This project demonstrates how parametric design, digital fabrication, and sustainable materials can come together to create large-scale, bespoke lighting art. The chandelier has transformed the atrium into a visually captivating space, making a bold statement for guests and contributing to the hotel's luxurious atmosphere.
By marrying technology with artistic intent, Fab.Pub’s installation not only serves as an innovative lighting solution but also as a powerful example of the future of architectural design.
