Rethinking Waste: A Pavilion for Sustainable Urban Design
Blending Circularity with Innovation: A Pavilion Designed for a Sustainable Future
What if your next urban design could help solve the global waste crisis?
How can we tackle the challenges of waste and sustainability in urban design? Made from compostable sugar-based PLA, this pop-up auditorium aims to showcase the possibilities of circular design in creating more sustainable spaces.
Designed by Mamou-Mani Architects, in collaboration with Arup and Therme Group, this pavilion embodies international and interdisciplinary cooperation. It features Fab.Pub’s 3D-printed parametric products, produced by mobile factories worldwide. The pavilion exemplifies how circular design principles can contribute to more sustainable urban environments, demonstrating the innovative potential of compostable materials like PLA.
Design Challenge: Meeting the demand for sustainable urban development.
With cities growing rapidly, the waste generated by urban development is a growing concern. How can designers use materials that reduce waste while still creating functional and aesthetically pleasing structures? This project aimed to demonstrate how compostable materials could be used in large-scale urban installations without compromising on design.
The Solution: A focus on circular design with compostable materials.
The pavilion features twelve modular 3D-printed wall partition panels, made entirely from compostable sugar-based PLA. These panels embody the principles of Reduce, Repurpose, Reuse, and Recycle, symbolizing the harmony between design and environmental consciousness. The innovative use of parametric design enabled efficient production with minimal waste, while showcasing the versatility of compostable materials in urban settings.
