Neko Health Birmingham
Large format 3D printed sculptural light installation produced through digital fabrication and modular assembly.
Sculptural Installation for Neko Health Birmingham
How can a large sculptural light installation be digitally fabricated and assembled with precision?
For Neko Health’s Birmingham clinic, Fab.Pub fabricated a sculptural helix installation designed to welcome visitors as they enter the space. The floor-to-ceiling piece needed to feel lightweight and refined while integrating lighting, structural stability, and precise alignment between the ceiling and floor.
Transforming the parametric geometry into a physical installation required a carefully developed digital fabrication workflow. The form was translated into a modular system produced through large-format 3D printing, allowing the sculpture to be manufactured, transported, and assembled while maintaining visual continuity across the entire piece.
The Challenge: Fabricating a seamless floor-to-ceiling sculptural installation with integrated lighting
For Neko Health’s Birmingham clinic, the entrance sculpture needed to feel lightweight, precise, and visually continuous. The helix geometry exceeded standard print volumes, requiring the form to be segmented into multiple modules while maintaining a seamless appearance.
At the same time, the sculpture integrates internal lighting. Achieving a soft and even glow required careful testing of materials, wall thickness, and diffusers to avoid visible banding or shadow lines between modules.
The Solution: Developing a modular large-format 3D printing workflow supported by material testing and prototyping
Fab.Pub translated the geometry into a modular fabrication system using large-format 3D printing. The sculpture was produced as a sequence of printed “pupa” modules designed for efficient transport and precise on-site assembly.
Prototyping focused on refining material clarity, layer quality, and lighting diffusion. Internal LEDs were paired with polycarbonate diffusers to achieve a soft 3000K glow, while custom joint details and mounting plates ensured accurate floor and ceiling integration.
The Impact: Delivering a precise sculptural feature that demonstrates the potential of large-scale digital fabrication
The final installation creates a calm visual landmark at the entrance of the clinic. The softly illuminated helix adds movement and identity to the space while maintaining a minimal architectural presence.
The project demonstrates how modular 3D printing, combined with prototyping and technical detailing, can deliver complex sculptural forms at architectural scale.
