A material is more than a colour on a screen.
At Fab.Pub, material development happens alongside design and fabrication. We work with PLA bioplastics and material compounds in our London workshop, using physical samples and print tests to explore their texture, appearance and behaviour.
Discuss your material requirements
Start with the intended use
A light shade, a piece of furniture and a retail installation ask different things of a material. We discuss the setting, surface, dimensions, expected use and any performance requirements before developing a proposal.
PLA is a bioplastic made from plant sugars and is one of the materials used in our work. Translucent and opaque finishes offer different possibilities. A material name alone is not a specification: the proposed compound, geometry and finish need to be considered together.
Compounds with their own character
Our material work includes compounds with plant fibres, timber, textiles and minerals. Their differences can become part of the design, rather than something to hide beneath a uniform surface.
Explore the biomaterials range and material innovation at Fab.Pub. Our dyeing studies and hydro-dipping experiments also show how finishing can change the result.
Could a material from your project become part of the piece?
A project can begin with a material as well as a shape. You might have timber residue, a mineral or a by-product connected to your place or production process. Bring that starting point to the conversation so we can discuss feasibility and a suitable testing brief.
Discuss the intended lifespan, maintenance, disassembly and end-of-use route from the outset. Those decisions should be specific to the finished piece, not replaced by a blanket environmental claim.

Let’s begin with a sample and a brief
Tell us what you want to make, where it will be used, the finish you are looking for and the performance requirements you need to meet. Include your scale, timeframe and indicative budget, plus details of any material you would like us to explore.
